4. Schoolhouses

Organic dyed cotton textiles; hand and machine sewn, 2024

Built from square blocks in the traditional Schoolhouse pattern, this quilt pays quiet tribute to the labor of teaching, and to the artist’s sister, whose work in the classroom mirrors the care and structure of quilting itself. Assembled from repurposed cotton and stitched by hand and machine, the piece honors repetition, patience, and presence.

Each block is a gesture of steadiness, a kind of architecture for learning. The quilt becomes both a pattern and a metaphor: a schoolhouse rendered not in brick or chalk, but in cloth and thread, held together by love and time.
